In 2019, the international seminar “Innovation and technology in the conservation of monuments and sites in humid and tropical environments” took place in Panamá. The seminar was the result of a grant that local institutions received from SENACYT (Secretariat of Science, Technology and Innovation of Panamá) to collaborate with regional partners in the organization of a seminar. The aim of this project was to create interchanges and synergies that eventually could lead to innovative solutions for the preservation of movable and immovable heritage related to monuments and sites. The seminar was divided in three main topics that are linked to the methodology of conservation of monuments and sites : preliminary studies , c onservation works , and p lanning and management. The first topic included lectures in surveying, documentation and characterization of materials. The second topic was related to specific work done in monuments and sites of the region. The third topic was related to planning a nd management and included shared experiences about different aspects of the management of monuments and sites, especially how to approach subjects such as maintaining the values, conservation issues related to tropical and humid weather, carrying capacity, risks, climate change and pollution. The conclusions pointed out similar problems in the region and emphasized the importance of creating research networks and sharing experiences to resolve the problems presented in the conservation field. The innovative solution might be in the way resources are used, or in the combination of traditional techniques with new technology.
